Holy Millions, Batman!

Last year, a copy of the first Superman comic sold for $317,200. Now a copy of the 1939 comic where Batman made his debut sold for more than $1 million! The buyer remains anonymous, it was sold at a Dallas auction house. This purchase of Detective Comics No. 27 broke all kinds of records. A couple days ago, another copy of the 1938 edition of Action Comics No 1, featuring Superman on the cover, also sold for $1 million. But this recent purchase of the Batman copy has beaten that record.

It really doesn't surprise me that these two staples in comic book history are selling for that much even though its rather astonishing. Both Superman and Batman are far more than just superheroes at this stage of the game and instead a valuable part of pop culture that paint an instant picture in peoples minds whether they ever opened a comic book or watched on their cartoons across their lives.

We're also dealing with two books that don't have many copies left in existence. I think less than ten of each are known to exist. Of course there are probably attics or basements where a few more remain hidden but who knows if they'll ever turn up.

The funny part about these two first appearances is their very short length in the full magazine. I understand the first ever Superman story in Action Comics #1 is 13 pages while Batman's over in Detective Comics is about 12. Wild stuff. Too rich for my blood though.
